Overview

A $30 million extension of the 2018 Adaptive Stormwater initiative is fueling the development of a transformative greenway along Walnut Creek, poised to stretch three miles upon its completion. This expansive project promises to seamlessly connect several key destinations, including Downtown Cary Park, Fenton, WakeMed Soccer Park, the Triangle Aquatic Center, and South Hills District.

Project Scope

The project consists of a three-mile extension:*

  • Downtown Phase Corridor (+/- 1.0 miles): Downtown Cary Park to SE Maynard Road
  • Fenton Phases Corridor (+/- 0.9 miles): SE Maynard to Cary Towne Blvd.
  • South Hills Corridor (+/- 1.0 miles): Cary Towne Blvd to Buck Jones Road

About 5-7 years once funding is allocated, including land acquisition, master planning, design, bidding, construction, and opening.

Project History

Cary has identified a greenway along Walnut Creek since its first Parks, Greenways & Bikeways Master Plan in 1998. Cary owns a majority of the land needed to connect Downtown Cary to South Hills via Fenton. With redevelopment and new development occurring along this corridor, this greenway connection has risen to a top priority to make connections.

As a continuation of the Adaptive Stormwater initiative conducted in 2018, the Walnut Creek watershed within the downtown Maynard loop was used as a pilot to assess various means to address flooding issues in the area. The analysis and action from the initiative included dynamic flood modeling, proactive maintenance, ordinance revisions, and open space acquisition to increase this green corridor’s effectiveness for flood mitigation.

A $150 million multi-purpose center in western Cary designed to cater to the needs and interests of people of all ages and backgrounds. The vision is for a community center that provides a wide range of facilities and programs, and includes access to basketball courts, senior activities, an indoor playground, multi-use classrooms plus ceramic studio, aerobic gyms, space for fitness and weight training, plus a walking track.

Sports & Recreation Community Center

A $300 million multi-generational sports and recreation community center situated in the redeveloping South Hills district. Planned features would include a 70,000-square-foot community center with amenities for seniors, an esports center equipped with gaming stations and streaming facilities, and an 80,000-square-foot sports center with 8 multi-purpose courts.
